Vinayaka Mission’s College of Nursing, Karaikal, U.T of Puducherry was established in the year 2004, situated in the picturesque views of Bay of Bengal in a pleasant and spacious campus. It is approved by the Govt. of Puducherry, Recognized by the Indian Nursing Council, New Delhi and Tamilnadu Nurses and Midwives Council, Chennai. The college became under the ambit of Vinayaka Mission’s Research Foundation (Deemed to be University), Salem in the year 2004. The M.Sc. (Nursing) Degree Course was started during the year 2009 with 5 Specialties.
A challenging profession, Nursing is dedicated to the service of humanity. The college trains and prepares skillful nurses with a healing touch. The ability to understand and soothe are as important to a nurse’s career as expertise in Medical techniques and care. The teaching methods reflect this with interactivity and a stress on communicating with peers and faculty through discussions, symposia, seminars, panel discussions and debates. The sessions are made lively using multimedia projectors and other media to explain theory.
The Continuing Nursing Education (CNE) programme gives students every opportunity to listen to experts and upgrade their knowledge. A dedicated and motivated team of faculty led by a highly qualified and experienced Head of the Institution facilitates necessary guidance and encouragement for effective functioning. The undergraduate and postgraduate students have separate faculty to give them individual attention. The Postgraduate faculty members include experts in all the specializations, who keep themselves abreast of latest trends by attending and presenting papers in conferences and by publishing indexed journals.
The undergraduate programme gives an understanding of health sciences with a strong foundation in the basic sciences. The syllabus is structured to teach Medical Surgical Nursing, Community Health Nursing, Paediatric Nursing, Psychiatric Nursing and Midwifery, English, Computer Science, Management, Education, Research and Biostatistics. The Postgraduate programme gives additional skills in administrative and management areas, while allowing students to specialize in Medical, Surgical, Community Health, Paediatric Nursing, Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Phychiatric Nursing. The postgraduate students are encouraged to undertake research and interventional studies.
The nursing students are active in the community health centre. Regular immunization days, maternity and child care as well as treatment of minor alignments and referral services are carried out. Students actively participate in Malaria and Filarial eradication, Tuberculosis control and Pulse polio programmes conducted by national organizations.
Alumini of nursing have a regular reunion annually. Many of the institute’s alumni are well placed in hospitals and healthcare centers in India and Abroad.
